National first-preference votes per party (AEC party names) and seats won, from the AEC's final-results file (Phase:FinalResults, generated 16 Jun 2025). House seats are won in 150 single-member divisions by full preferential voting, so first preferences do not determine seats. Rows: every party that won a seat ('Independent' is the AEC's aggregate of all independent candidates, 10 elected) plus parties above 1% of first preferences without a seat; the AEC lists 27 lines, the 15 others (all below 1%, no seats) are left out (their votes are in totalVotes). The Liberal Party, the Liberal National Party of Queensland, The Nationals and the Country Liberal Party (NT, 35,785 votes, 0 seats, not listed) are separate lines as in the AEC table. Seats sum to 150 (AEC 'Elected' column; ALP 94). Formal votes 15,490,236; informal 919,512; total votes 16,409,748 (AEC 'Informal votes by state', summed); enrolment 18,091,591 (AEC 'Enrolment by state', summed); turnout 90.70%. publishedAt is the return of the writs. DATE (tentative, latest lawful date for a joint election): House — Constitution s.28: the House 'shall continue for three years from the first meeting', first met 22 Jul 2025, so it expires 21 Jul 2028; s.32: writs within ten days, by 31 Jul 2028; Electoral Act s.156: nominations at most 27 days after the writ (27 Aug); s.157: polling at most 31 days after nominations (27 Sep, a Wednesday); s.158: a Saturday, so 23 Sep 2028 for a House-only election. Half-Senate — Constitution s.13: the election 'shall be made within one year before the places are to become vacant'; the state senators elected in 2022 leave on 30 Jun 2028, so the writs can issue from 1 Jul 2027 (earliest polling 7 Aug 2027). The law sets no latest polling day; the Parliamentary Library takes 5 weeks for the count and return of the writs before 1 July: polling by 26 May, Saturday 20 May 2028. House and half-Senate have been held together since 1970 (FlagPost), so this file uses 20 May 2028, the latest date for both together. The Prime Minister can advise an earlier dissolution at any time (snap-election risk); a double dissolution would need a s.57 trigger and is latest 25 Mar 2028. The 2026 entitlement determination (AEC, 23 Jul 2026) keeps 150 House seats: NSW 46, Vic 38, Qld 30, WA 16, SA 10, Tas 5, ACT 3, NT 2. Polls close at 6 pm local time (Electoral Act s.220(c); AEC 2025 timetable: 'from 8am to 6pm local time'). On 20 May 2028 no state is on daylight saving (it ends the first Sunday of April), so the closes are: Norfolk Island polling place (UTC+11) 07:00 UTC; NSW, Vic, Qld, Tas, ACT (AEST, UTC+10) 08:00 UTC; SA, NT (ACST, UTC+9:30) 08:30 UTC; WA (AWST, UTC+8) 10:00 UTC. pollsCloseUtc is the LAST close, WA's 10:00 UTC, the convention of the Russia, Mexico and US models. The 2025 Lingiari tally room lists no ordinary election-day polling place on Christmas Island (UTC+7) or Cocos (Keeling) Islands (UTC+6:30), only mobile teams; if one opens there in 2028 its 6 pm close would be 11:00 or 11:30 UTC. Ordinary votes, and House ordinary votes from pre-poll centres, are counted from 6 pm in each place (AEC 2025 timetable), and the AEC tally room shows first preferences and an indicative two-candidate-preferred count as booths report. The window opens at the first mainland close (08:00 UTC; Norfolk Island's small booth closes an hour earlier) and closes at the end of Sunday 21 May AWST — an ESTIMATE of when the election-night count stops moving, not a published time. Many declaration (postal, absent, early) votes are still to come, so this is never the result.

Post-election count on the same tally room page: declaration votes are scrutinised and added, and preferences distributed. Electoral Act s.228(5A) and s.266(1)(b): postal votes count if received 'within 13 days after the close of the poll' — Friday 2 June 2028 for a 20 May poll (AEC 2025 timetable: 'Friday 16 May 6:00PM Last day for receipt of declaration votes' for 3 May). The window opens Monday 22 May 08:00 AEST (an estimate) and closes at that statutory deadline, taken at 6 pm AWST. Close seats keep counting after it.

The official result is each Divisional Returning Officer's public declaration of the elected candidate, then the Electoral Commissioner's return of the writs to the Governor-General (Electoral Act s.284). 'Final' here means all 150 seats declared. Precedent, AEC declaration events 2025: first seats declared Thursday 15 May 2025 (Maranoa, day 12); last Friday 6 June 2025 (Bradfield, after a recount, day 34); writs returned Thursday 12 June 2025 (day 40, AEC 2025 timetable). Day 34 after 20 May 2028 would be 23 June. The window ERRS LATE: it opens at the 13-day declaration-vote deadline (2 Jun; a few safe seats may be declared a day or two earlier) and closes at the latest lawful return of the writs — s.159 allows 100 days after issue, and for a 20 May poll the writs are issued at least 33 days before (by 17 Apr 2028), so 26 Jul 2028 at the latest; end of day taken in AWST. The writs themselves will fix the actual return date. A petition to the High Court as Court of Disputed Returns is possible within 40 days after the return of the writs (s.355(e)), but no court must confirm the result, so there is no court-validation stage. If the House election is held without the half-Senate (lawful as late as 23 Sep 2028) or earlier (an early dissolution), every date here moves with polling day.
  4. Governo formado

    precedente
No statutory step: the Governor-General commissions a Prime Minister who can command the confidence of the House, usually once the outcome is clear and before all seats are declared. Precedent: the second Morrison ministry was sworn in 29 May 2019 (election 18 May, day 11); the first Albanese (interim) ministry 23 May 2022 (election 21 May, day 2); the second Albanese ministry 13 May 2025 (election 3 May, day 10) — dates from Wikipedia 'List of Australian ministries', not yet checked against pmc.gov.au or gg.gov.au. The new Parliament must meet within 30 days of the day appointed for the return of the writs (Constitution s.5). No expectedFrom is set because the commission can come before the final result.
