    estimate
DATE (tentative, the latest lawful polling day): the Parliament first met 9 Jul 2024 (Commons Library parliament-periods), so absent an earlier dissolution it dissolves at the start of Mon 9 Jul 2029 (DCPA 2022 s. 4). RPA 1983 Sch. 1 r. 1: nominations close on the 6th day after dissolution and polling is on the 19th day after that, counting under r. 2 without Saturdays, Sundays and UK bank holidays: Thu 12 Jul 2029 (Northern Ireland, appointed yearly by proclamation under BFDA 1971 s. 1(3); the 2027 one was made on 8 Jul 2026, so the 2029 one should exist before dissolution, as r. 2(2A) requires), Mon 6 Aug 2029 (Scotland, 'The first Monday in August', BFDA Sch. 1 para. 2). Nominations close Wed 18 Jul; polling Wed 15 Aug 2029, the 25th working day after dissolution (same rule checks against 2024: dissolved 30 May, polled 4 Jul). If 12 Jul 2029 were not appointed before dissolution, polling would be Tue 14 Aug. DCPA 2022 s. 2 revives the prerogative power to dissolve Parliament earlier (exercised on the Prime Minister's advice), so an earlier election is possible; none called as of 2 Oct 2026. Polling 07:00-22:00 (RPA 1983 Sch. 1 r. 1); 15 Aug 2029 is in British Summer Time (UTC+1), so polls close 21:00 UTC. Returning officers must take reasonable steps to begin counting within four hours of the close (Sch. 1 r. 45(3A)) and declare each result 'forthwith' once ascertained (r. 50). There is no national preliminary count: each of the 650 constituency declarations is that seat's formal result, published by its returning officer, and they arrive overnight. The window end (noon BST Thursday) is an ESTIMATE of when most seats have declared; 2024 per-seat declaration times were not checked (the Commons Library page general-elections/6/declaration-times says 'Declaration times are not available'). A broadcasters' exit poll at 22:00 BST is customary but was not researched, so no exit-poll stage.
  2. Final result
    →
    precedent
The result is complete when the last of the 650 returning officers has declared (RPA 1983 Sch. 1 r. 50) and returned the writ to the Clerk of the Crown (r. 51); no national body proclaims a total. Precedent: in 2024 (polling Thu 4 Jul) the last seat, Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire, was declared on Saturday 6 Jul 2024, day 2, after a second recount (press: Rayo/PA, 6 Jul 2024; Express & Star/PA, 11 Jul 2024; not checked on the returning officer's own site). Sch. 1 r. 2(1): a returning officer is not obliged to count on a Saturday, Sunday or bank holiday, so a late recount could slip past the weekend of 18-19 Aug 2029. The window therefore closes at the end of Tuesday 21 Aug 2029, BST - day 6, erring late. The opening (06:00 BST Thursday) is an ESTIMATED floor. The House of Commons Library later publishes a compiled, verified dataset (electionresults.parliament.uk); that compilation is not a legal act. Election petitions may be presented within 21 days after the return (RPA 1983 s. 122(1)); they are optional and no court confirms the result, so no court-validation stage.
  3. Government formed
    → —
    precedent
The King appoints the Prime Minister; no statute sets a step or deadline, and the incumbent stays in office until a successor is appointed. Precedent: 2024 polling 4 Jul, Prime Minister appointed 5 Jul 2024 (gov.uk/government/people/keir-starmer: 'Prime Minister from 5 July 2024'); 2010 polling 6 May, 'became Prime Minister on 11 May 2010' after coalition talks (gov.uk past-prime-ministers/david-cameron). The opening (06:00 BST the morning after polling) is an ESTIMATE. The new Parliament first meets on a day set by royal proclamation (2024: 9 Jul).
